A world-class professional fly-fishing team dedicated to protecting rivers and taimen.
We’ve been fly-fishing in Mongolia since 1991… longer than just about anyone.
And every year it just keeps getting better!
With dozens of seasonal wilderness luxury fishing camps providing access to hundreds of kilometers of protected Mongolian rivers, there is no one better staffed and equipped for this kind of trip.
With a deep respect for Mongolian nature and our traditional communities, Mongolia River Outfitters and Fish Mongolia are both recognized for outstanding service, wonderful fishing, and conservation leadership.
These are Mongolia’s only drift boat operations. Our waters are quiet and wild… Our camps run on solar, candles, and sustainably harvested firewood. Our ecologically appropriate camps are completely dismantled every year, leaving no trace and keeping Mongolia’s rivers free of development… the way they should be.
We are honored to be represented by the world’s premier fly fishing agencies, including serving as the first and only Orvis Endorsed operation in Asia, and proud to have received a “Global Vision Award” from Travel+Leisure for our level of service and commitment to conservation and community. MRO/FM is a lifetime business member of Trout Unlimited.
We are particularly proud of our camp and guide crews. You’d be hard pressed to find a stronger international team. These folks are on a Mongolian river from June through October every year. They come from Mongolia, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, and the western USA every year to guide these rivers. During the off-season, they are writing about fly-fishing for headline journals, leading trips for some of the globe’s finest fly-fishing destinations, or working with Mongolian communities to protect taimen year-round. They are seasoned veterans with decades of experience and a great group of friends.
You’ll enjoy their knowledge and enthusiasm for our country, the art of fly-fishing, and taimen conservation.
Nomadic Journeys is the parent company responsible for both operations. Nomadic Journeys is a fully licensed Mongolian company. The company is one of Mongolia’s largest tour operators. The Mongolian Government has given Nomadic Journeys several awards for our contributions to Mongolia’s economic development and the conservation of our nation’s unique natural and cultural landscape. The Nomadic Journeys office and full-time professional staff are located a few steps from Sukhbaatar Square in the very center of Ulaanbaatar.

When you call or write to inquire about a trip, one of these folks will respond. They are all old friends with years of fly-fishing and Mongolia experience.

Ganna Ganna is a real professional and keeps all the logistics together. When you book a trip, Ganna and her team will contact you to help make sure all the details move along smoothly. She has worked for years in the tourism industry. Before this, Ganna worked on conservation and development issues consulting for organizations such as The World Bank. She’s looking forward to welcoming you to Mongolia!
Handasuren grew up along the banks of a Mongolian river and has a deep respect and knowledge of Mongolian nature and culture. Handaa famously taught herself English while herding sheep on the Mongolian steppe! Handaa has explored wilderness camps in both Africa and Asia, learning what it takes to have a truly world-class operation. She runs a tight ship and makes certain the camps and operations are all top-notch. Handaa has been with MRO/FM for almost twenty years and is a true friend to all of our MRO/FM anglers.
Mark Johnstad has been fly fishing Mongolia for nearly thirty years. Mark is deeply committed to taimen conservation and helped found our operations for that specific purpose. Montana raised, Mark first visited Mongolia to ride a horse across the country. Instead, he ended up helping create the modern system of protected areas. Mark lived here for a long time, still returns every year and did eventually make that epic ride. There is likely not another westerner with more years and experience exploring Mongolia’s outback.
Manduhai Suhbaatar is the director Nomadic Journeys. Manduhai and her husband, Enktaivan, founded Nomadic Journeys in the early 1990’s. Manduhai and Enktaivan are the quiet engine behind this operation. They are dynamic and successful professionals who are highly respected by the Mongolian business community. Their objective remains to create a model for tourism that supports the conservation of Mongolia’s unique landscape and culture.
